Rules, routines, procedures, oh my!

Rules, routines, procedures, oh my! So much for our little angels to learn! At the beginning of every school year I introduce my Morning Routine to the students, modeling what it looks like, what it sounds like, and offer positive reinforcement for those who are, well, actually following directions! This year I decided to post my "poster" on the projector for that constant reminder of what the morning expectations are. I underlined the "key words" because this is a strategy I teach my second graders to help them pick out the key details while they read and I have an icon to help my struggling readers with a visual. I used alternating colors to make it easier on the eyes and my last "check" is my morning work or activity they should be working on, that changes daily.  I also have my Morning Routine posted on the chalk board for when I have substitutes in my room.

Below are a few more pictures of how I make my students self-determined learners.

Students check in their hw using the codes. I have a hw checker that makes sure everyone is checked-in!
Students also select their lunch choice. I use numbers so I can reuse the magnets.
I also have a lunch count helper that fills out the lunch slips to work on math skills.
This is my Afternoon Routine that is posted in my room.  I think this year I will also put it on the screen. But I am usually finding a video clip for the kids at dismissal to dance to. We practice, practice, and practice some more!!

The students get their mail at the end of the day. I also have a student who is in charge of filling mailboxes!

Putting the students in charge helps them become responsible individuals! You are always going to have those few who need that little extra encouragement. What would we be there for if they could do it all!

Please let me know what you do for your daily routines! I would love to hear from you as I am just starting out in the blogging world and am learning along the way!!! Please follow me too!!!

Who doesn't love to shop?

I remember when I was a kid. I couldn't wait to go back to school shopping. Now I get to take my own kids shopping. My daughter is super excited to start kindergarten and has everything from the new backpack down to the twinkling Sketcher sneakers.  My son on the other hand could really care less. I guess that's the difference between boys and girls. Still trying to play around with adding pictures, but it's painfully slow.  I need to research a little more first!

So, I had this great idea that on top of moving to a new school, not by choice I might add, I would begin a blog and try out this teachers pay teachers thing that everyone raves about. I look at the amazing things people are creating and ask myself, "How do they do that?" So I am going to try and figure it out! It may be something that takes off for me or something that flops.  WELL... here goes nothing!
